Genetic testing for breast cancer
Each year, almost 200,000 American women learn they have breast cancer. Approximately 5 to 10 percent of these women have a hereditary form of the disease. Changes, called mutations, in certain genes make some women more susceptible to developing breast and other types of cancer. These alterations in the genes are involved in many cases of hereditary breast and ovarian cancer, and can be detected by genetic testing. Now, the question arises: who should get those tests and how serious is it if you are diagnosed as having the gene? Here to talk about this is our Diet & Lifestyle Consultant Dr. Stephanie Beling. Athletes using ephedra risk health
Keeping in shape and extending careers have made sports stars millions of dollars over the past few decades and the promise of those big pay-days cause some athletes to look for an added edge by taking dietary supplements containing ephedra. In February, Steve Bechler, a 23-year-old pitcher for The Baltimore Orioles baseball team collapsed from heatstroke and died after taking a weight-loss supplement made from ephedra. The Broward County Medical Examiner concluded that ephedra played a significant role in Bechler's death and urged Major League Baseball to join the National Football League, the NCAA and the International Olympic Committee and ban ephedra.
